The NBA’s Serious Business

When it comes to the NBA, everything is quite serious. I mean, just look at the Philadelphia 76ers; they’ve got a strong franchise. Honestly, I might actually consider them my favorite for the upcoming Eastern Conference season.

Now, when you take things as seriously as I do, it’s crucial to cut out any distractions that could lead to overestimating or underestimating a team’s chances. Past results? Not relevant. Proof of concept? Doesn’t really matter. Speculations about injuries? That’s just funny. If you overlook these key points, the 76ers seemingly make a compelling case to be your top choice for the conference title.

Let’s evaluate their roster fairly as we head into next season. Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain were showing promise as elite young players before injuries and a rough end to the previous season stalled their progress. Paul George had what I’d call a pretty disappointing year—his average dropped significantly, and honestly, it felt like a major setback. Adding in players like VJ Edgecombe and perhaps Dwyane Wade for a few months, there’s a decent core here that has notable potential for growth.

Maxey seems poised to take charge. His burst of speed and shooting skills are impressive, plus the 76ers are well-equipped on defense to cover his weaknesses. He’s not ‘just okay’ defensively; he shares a similar drive to guys like Tyrese Haliburton and Darius Garland, even if he’s a bit lean. His ball-handling is something to admire, really.

Then there are the additional players who round out the team nicely. Oshae Brissett and Quinten Grimes have skills that could thrive in the playoffs. I really think Edgecombe is an x-factor. I liked what I saw during his time at Baylor; he’s a real talent who stands out among the draft picks. The team-building here feels more like a rough sketch rather than a polished masterpiece, but there’s potential.

Looking at other teams, it seems like the Boston Celtics are discarding assets as if they were at a garage sale. The Cleveland Cavaliers seem only a moment away from dismantling their lineup. The Atlanta Hawks managed to piece together somewhat interesting plans—but, hey, it’s still the Hawks. Meanwhile, the New York Knicks are looking at new coaching prospects and some decent signings. The Indiana Pacers appear to be in a bit of turmoil, while the Milwaukee Bucks are dealing with the fallout from their trades.

In the midst of all this, it feels like the 76ers are finally ready to really shine. They’ve got a mix of exciting young talent and an infrastructure that looks ready to break through. While they’ve faced tougher opponents in recent years—like the Celtics and superstars such as Kawhi Leonard and LeBron James—there’s less to fear now.

Sure, I get it. You have to consider that they also have Joel Embiid. It’s almost amusing to think about discussions that don’t mention him at all. Maybe this is the year Philadelphia catches a break. Historically, Embiid and the 76ers have often found themselves on the wrong side of outcomes in the Eastern Conference. Yet, as others falter, the potential for the 76ers seems to be strengthening. If Embiid can hold off any major issues until next July, they could really be onto something special.

Yes, that does involve quite a few ‘what ifs,’ but then again, every championship run involves some element of luck. So, I think we should all seriously consider the 76ers’ odds against the competition as we wrap this up.
