Dayana Yasuternska Shocks at Wimbledon
On Tuesday, Dayana Yasuternska made a significant impact at Wimbledon by defeating second-seeded Coco Gauff in straight sets during the first round. This upset has garnered attention, as Yasuternska, unseeded, isn’t a well-known name in tennis circles.
The Ukrainian player, who is 25, holds a world ranking of 42 and has three WTA singles titles under her belt.
This victory undoubtedly stands as the most significant moment of her career so far, creating more buzz around her presence in the tournament.
Interestingly, Yasuternska has shared that she suffers from an allergy to grass. After her recent performance at the Nottingham Open, she remarked, “Even though I think I’m a bit allergic to the grass!” This adds an intriguing backstory to her triumph on the grass courts of Wimbledon.
Despite being outside the mainstream spotlight, she has built a following on social media, boasting 217,000 Instagram followers where she shares both her athletic achievements and glimpses into her personal life, including modeling and fashion. “I like modeling, I like fashion, I like philosophy, I like a lot of things,” she mentioned, although she added, “But I don’t have much time for that.”
Yasuternska’s talents extend beyond the tennis court; during the pandemic, she showcased her musical skills by releasing two singles in the summer of 2020, titled “Thousands of Me” and “Favorite Tracks.” In a 2020 Instagram post, she humorously stated, “I’m not trying to be a cool artist.”
However, her music career faced challenges when she received a temporary doping ban in 2021 following a positive test for a banned substance. Fortunately, she was cleared six months later when an independent court determined the result was due to contamination.
In the midst of her career upheaval, Yasuternska shared her harrowing experience of fleeing Ukraine when the Russian invasion occurred in February 2022. After spending two nights in an underground parking garage, her parents decided to send her and her sister out of the country for safety.
Looking ahead, Yasuternska is set to face Anastasia Zaharava in the second round of Wimbledon, following her unexpected victory. She also recently released a new single titled “Hearts” in February 2024.
