Concerns About Kids in Public Spaces Voiced on Social Media

A growing conversation among women on social media explores why more parents should consider keeping their children at home. One particular voice in this discussion is Dominique Bird, a 31-year-old from Austin, Texas, who identifies as “ChildFree by Choice.” She recently expressed a desire for more child-free environments.

In a TikTok video that has garnered over 200,000 views, Bird attributes her frustrations not to the children themselves but to the parents who bring them out, stating that childless individuals often desire spaces where kids aren’t present.

She shared an anecdote about a high tea outing with friends, describing how their peaceful gathering was disrupted when a family entered with young children. “We’re having a good time, and then suddenly two and a half-year-olds come running in,” Bird recalled. The moment was quickly overshadowed by chaos.

Bird described how, instead of swiftly taking an upset child outside, the mother slowly escorted her towards the door, where the child then vomited. “And they just left without cleaning it up,” she noted, highlighting the parents’ lack of responsibility in that situation.

Many commenters on her video seemed to agree, suggesting that it’s the duty of parents to be mindful of their children’s behavior in public settings.

Bird remarked on the broader issue: “Parents need to recognize their actions.” Some responses included calls for places free of children, underscoring how essential it is for adult spaces to exist.

Others chimed in with observations, such as, “When parents say, ‘We deserve to go out too,’ well, choices change when you have kids. You can’t expect the same freedom.” This sentiment doesn’t stem from a dislike of children, but rather reflects a desire for a balanced space where adults can unwind without distractions.

Bird’s perspective has sparked similar thoughts among others. She noted that while people often label her as “barren,” it’s more about finding what makes one happy. “I’m not a happy mother,” she admitted, saying she prefers a life without children.

The desire for child-free spaces is substantiated by research from Michigan State University, which indicated that over the last 20 years, the number of people in the U.S. who don’t want children has doubled. “This data suggests a significant national trend,” remarked Zachary Neal, a professor of psychology and co-author of the study.

This ongoing dialogue hints at larger cultural shifts regarding parenthood and social spaces, suggesting that the divide between parents and non-parents may continue to grow as societal values evolve.
