Increased ICE presence causes LA communities to skip July 4th festivities

July 4th Celebrations Canceled in Los Angeles Area

Los Angeles and nearby cities will not hold their July 4th celebrations this year due to increased activity from federal immigration officials. This decision has led to the cancellation of various events, including the East Los Angeles Rock’s July 4th celebration and the Gloria Morina Grand Park Summer Block Party, which was set to host thousands in 2024.

Other communities around Los Angeles—like Bell Gardens, Boyle Heights, Cudahy, Huntington Park, and Whittier—are also opting out of Independence Day festivities. The town of El Sereno has followed suit as well.

In Huntington Park, the cancellations have extended beyond just the holiday. They have included a 30-day suspension of certain public summer events. Officials from Huntington Park highlighted concerns related to unmarked vehicles and unidentified federal agents, which have instilled fear in many residents, particularly among immigrants and mixed-status families. Reports suggest that many are choosing to stay indoors and avoid public life altogether, expressing a desire for safety and peace in their communities.

Mayor Arturo Flores of Huntington Park described the rising ICE operations as a “domestic terror campaign,” likening it to psychological warfare. Meanwhile, a deputy mayor from Cudahy has made headlines for calling on gang leaders, through a now-deleted TikTok post, to safeguard their neighborhoods from ICE activities.

In a broader context, increasing federal enforcement has been driven by the Trump administration’s policies, pushing community leaders to rethink public celebrations. The Pentagon also has recently announced the deployment of 150 California State Guard members to assist with wildfire efforts in the area.
