Climate Rebellion Secures Tax-Exempt Status
The climate protest group, Climate Rebellion, announced on Tuesday that it has been designated as a 501(c)(3) organization by the IRS, enabling it to provide tax-exempt donations to environmental activist organizations.
Michael Greenberg, the group’s founder, remarked that this status allows such organizations to “level up and reach maximum power and scale.” Established in 2023, Climate Rebellion aims to dismantle what it refers to as “fossil fuel fascism” and seeks to move past the influence of former President Trump, as noted on its website.
In its announcement on Instagram, Climate Rebellion suggested that the classification will facilitate efforts to combat the fossil fuel industry by redirecting financial resources away from polluters and arms manufacturers.
Breaking: We closed Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s book talk on the 6th and at my synagogue. We humiliated her in front of her beltway companions and dark money donors.
It’s anger that she is even thinking about approving a big beautiful bill. This is unbearable. This is unbearable. pic.twitter.com/yc12otgne5

Members of Climate Rebellion have previously disrupted events attended by politicians from both major parties. For instance, in 2024, activists interrupted a ceremony by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin at the Arlington Cemetery. Additionally, they protested during the Democratic National Committee’s winter meeting, decrying the DNC as “an unclean alliance of fossil fuel money and party politics.”
During the 2024 Congressional baseball game, activists seemingly created chaos by running onto the field, leading to confrontations with Capitol Police. Other members even performed climate-themed holiday songs outside a market in Washington, D.C., until Christmas 2023.
Before achieving nonprofit status, a primary funding source for Climate Rebellion was the Climate Emergency Fund, another 501(c)(3) organization that receives significant contributions from affluent donors.
The group endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
The IRS has yet to respond to requests for comments regarding this classification.
