Trump Launches Celebration for America’s 250th Anniversary
WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump is gearing up for a “magnificent” birthday party to celebrate 250 years of American independence. On Thursday, he plans to kick off patriotic festivities in the heart of the US, which are set to continue leading up to the anniversary next year.
The gathering will take place at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, concluding an evening filled with stunning displays, musical acts, and fireworks that reflect American history.
Organizers are aiming for this festival as a means of fostering unity among polarized groups. The Thursday event coincides with efforts by a Republican-led Congress to finalize a significant tax cut and spending plan central to Trump’s legislative goals, which faces opposition from Democrats. Interestingly, more adults in the US seem to disapprove of Trump’s job performance than approve it.
Iowa was deemed a “logical choice” for this launch, as Crawley noted, citing Trump’s victories there in the last three general elections and the state’s central location. She also believes that Iowa’s geographic position symbolizes the desire for the celebrations to bridge divides.
“We’ve seen so much division and polarization over the years. I think we can bring people together to celebrate shared patriotism and values,” Crawley expressed.
A recent Gallup poll indicated that partisan divides in patriotism are at a 20-year high, with only about a third of Democrats reporting pride in being American, while nearly 90% of Republicans feel differently.
An AP-NORC poll from June revealed that around 40% of Americans approved of Trump’s presidential performance, with 60% disapproving. Notably, the timing of this event coincides with Trump’s 79th birthday, suggesting some complications regarding government funding for the celebration.
Crawley mentioned the political and ideological splits that have challenged the country ahead of the last major birthday celebration, recalling events from 1976, shortly after the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal that led to Nixon’s resignation.
“That moment was crucial for national unity, and I’m optimistic that the celebrations we are initiating will help us move forward,” she remarked.
Celebrating America’s 250th birthday, she stated, “I think all Americans will find a reason to come together for our history, present, and future.”
On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, marking the official break from Britain by the 13 colonies.
“We’re going to have a huge celebration for 250 years,” Trump remarked at Arlington National Cemetery. “In some ways, I’m glad I missed the second term; I won’t be your president for that.”
Trump, who proposed the Great American State Fair in Iowa in May 2023, has been re-engaging with the public since his re-election bid last November. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds communicated to the White House early this year that the state is prepared to host this event.
While specific details about next year’s gathering at Washington’s National Mall remain under wraps, Trump has expressed excitement about the kickoff. The Thursday night lineup features Lee Greenwood, known for “God Bless the USA,” often played at Trump rallies, along with appearances from Homeland Security Secretary Christie Norm and Agriculture Secretary Brook Rollins.
