Heightened Focus on Israel-Hamas Conflict

The global spotlight seems to have shifted back to the ongoing Israel-Hamas War, especially following a recent confrontation involving Iran and its nuclear program. Since Hamas launched a sudden and fierce attack on October 7, 2023, Israel has been engaged in military operations in Gaza for more than 20 months.

The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) has faced significant scrutiny over their tactics during this conflict, particularly regarding the impact on civilians and the management of humanitarian aid. Retired British Colonel Richard Kemp spoke with Fox News Digital, emphasizing that Israel is making every effort to prevent civilian casualties. Recently returned from a trip to Israel and Gaza, Kemp described the situation as “very harsh,” noting that Hamas often hides among civilians and utilizes tunnels for their operations.

IDF’s Ongoing Challenges in Gaza

Kemp commended the IDF for its actions, stating, “In my view, IDF has done it very effectively.” They’ve reportedly neutralized numerous Hamas operatives and destroyed significant infrastructure, such as tunnels. Nonetheless, he acknowledged that there’s still much work ahead and the conflict is far from resolved.

This ongoing struggle underscores the challenge the military faces in trying to avoid civilian harm while targeting Hamas. Kemp suggested that civilian casualties in Gaza are “inevitable,” attributing this partially to the operational strategies employed by Hamas. He argued that the narrative blaming the IDF for high civilian deaths is part of a propaganda effort aimed at isolating Israel and accusing it of war crimes.

Ground Reality in Gaza

During his visit, Kemp met with civilians and observed a humanitarian aid distribution center run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which is supported by both the US and Israel. He noted that many civilians expressed gratitude for the assistance provided and recognized the role of the US under Donald Trump in facilitating this aid. Some civilians even pointed out that Hamas has significantly contributed to their dire situation.

Addressing criticisms of GHF from the international community, particularly the UN, Kemp defended its operations, contending that the UN often applies a “standard template solution” that doesn’t suit the complexities of the Gaza situation. He remarked on reports that Hamas has been known to intercept and sell aid, creating additional challenges for those in need.

Kemp highlighted the urgent need for other nations and humanitarian organizations to support GHF. He specifically noted a recent $30 million funding boost from the United States. “Other countries I know of don’t fund the GHF directly. They should,” he asserted, arguing that GHF represents a viable path forward for delivering aid, surpassing the current UN framework.
