A heartbreaking incident occurred over the weekend when 18-year-old college football player Mycheal Edwards-Wallace was fatally shot.
He had just started his freshman year at Division II Newbury College in Newbury, South Carolina, when the shooting took place at his apartment in Kingstree on Sunday night.
Alongside Edwards-Wallace, there were three other victims; another person passed away while two others sustained injuries, as reported by Live 5 News WCSC.
“Our hearts go out to his family,” stated Newbury head coach Todd Knight in an official statement. “It’s incredibly tragic for such a talented young man to lose his life so soon. He was a wonderful student, a great person with an engaging personality and a promising future. We were really looking forward to having him on our team.”
During his time at Kingstree High School in South Carolina, Edwards-Wallace played both offensive and defensive lines and earned numerous accolades, as highlighted in a school announcement.
He was also recognized as the school’s Athlete of the Year and participated in the Carolina Shrine Bowl, which showcases top players from both North and South Carolina.
“Newbury College mourns the loss of Mycheal Edwards-Wallace, an incoming football student-athlete,” the university expressed in a statement.
“The entire Newbury College community extends their deepest condolences to Mycheal’s family, friends, and teammates. We are keeping them in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly challenging time.”
Edwards-Wallace’s passing comes just over two months before Newberry’s season opener against UVa Wise on September 6th.
No arrests had been reported by Sunday night, and as of Monday afternoon, police had not provided any updates regarding the injured victims.
