Senate Democrat: Nation would be 'sicker, hungrier, and less well-off' if GOP megabill passes

Sen. Chris Coons Criticizes GOP’s Spending Bill

Senator Chris Coons from Delaware harshly criticized the GOP’s recent spending bill during an appearance on CNN, indicating that they were scrambling to finalize a settlement package for President Trump’s approval before the July 4 deadline. He suggested that if the bill becomes law, it wouldn’t be beneficial for Americans suffering from illness.

“If Americans understood the real consequences of this legislation, they would be furious because it impacts everyone,” Coons remarked while speaking with CNN’s John Berman.

He added, “Our healthcare expenses are set to increase, emergency room wait times will worsen, and the entire nation will face issues like hunger and poverty as a result of this bill.”

Coons’ comments followed a pivotal procedural vote in the House where Republicans managed to advance significant spending and tax legislation. Trump and GOP leaders are reportedly urging party members on the fence to align with them before the final voting, as the GOP can only afford to lose three votes.

The President reached out to GOP lawmakers early Thursday and posted online, questioning those hesitant about the bill, “What are you trying to prove?”

As the House readied for the key vote, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries addressed the chamber, referring to the “magic portion” of the proposal. His lengthy speech ultimately delayed the vote, reminiscent of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s record longest address in the lower chamber, which lasted 8 hours and 44 minutes.

Democrats opposed the spending bills, citing concerns over prolonged tax credits they argue benefit not just typical cuts in Medicaid and food stamp programs, but also wealthier individuals. There was significant criticism from both sides regarding the anticipated increase in national debt.

Coons previously tweeted, “Jesus urged us to feed the hungry and care for the sick, and we should do the same.” He criticized the GOP’s tax bill as detrimental to those who could most benefit the wealthy and the vulnerable, labeling it “immoral and dishonest.”
