Family of accused teacher Christina Formella argues she is a victim of misogyny and gender-based persecution despite allegations of abusing a student 50 times.

Christina Hormela, a teacher, has expressed that she feels victimized by what she describes as a misogynistic “sexist scrutiny,” claiming she’s unfairly depicted as a “predator.”

A family representative shared on Thursday, “This isn’t just about accusations; it’s a systematic punishment of women based on perception. When men are accused, we focus on facts and procedures. But when women are in the spotlight, their character and choices get attacked instead. It’s not justice; it’s a form of gender-based persecution masquerading as accountability.”

Hormela, 30 years old, was a special education teacher and soccer coach at Downers Grove High School in Illinois. She faces serious charges of grooming a 14-year-old student and engaging in sexual relations with him over 50 times once he turned 15. At the time, she was 28.

Prosecutors argue that evidence, including numerous text messages in which the boy reportedly said, “I love having sex with you,” indicates that Hormela is an obsessive abuser who had premeditated plans to take advantage of her husband’s wealth and run away with the teen.

Yet, Hormela’s supporters claim she is being unfairly targeted, citing her appearance and gender as the root causes of the backlash.

According to the statement, “Public discourse is fixated not on legalities, but on Christina’s looks, personal life—everything except the facts.” Hormela has been labeled variously as a “predator,” “dishonest wife,” and “hypocrite,” described by her family as a troubling stereotype perpetrated online.

The fallout from the allegations has led to what her family calls “real-world stalkers.” They likened some of these individuals to “so-called content creators” who have intruded into her life, with one instance reported where they disrupted a church service, forcing her family to confront harassment.

“This isn’t a case that’s simply been reported; she’s being hunted,” the representative stated, framing her situation as one of bullying. They argued that “irresponsible speculation and sensationalized reporting do nothing to uphold justice.”

The accusations surfaced in March after the alleged victim’s mother found explicit messages on his phone that suggested at least 45 instances of sexual encounters in classrooms, and even referencing shared moments with their husbands.

Hormela reportedly expressed deep feelings for the boy, and after their relationship ended, she claimed emotional distress, sharing passionate reflections in her diary, while still expressing a desire to be together.

The legal troubles began in 2023, coming to a head only after the boy ceased communication and eventually entered a relationship with someone else, Michael Fercera.

Fercera, totally unaware of any issues before his wife’s arrest, defended her, suggesting she might be a victim of blackmail related to her looks.

He has remained supportive, attending court proceedings with her. Following her arrest, Hormela was released on an ankle monitor with restrictions to stay away from the alleged victim.
