Democrats Visit New Immigration Detention Facility in Florida

On Thursday, a group of Democrats made a visit to the controversial “Crocodile Alcatraz,” an immigration detention center that is currently under construction near the Everglades and Big Cypress National Reserve in Florida. This visit, described as “official legislative site visits,” comes amid growing concerns raised by authorities regarding alarming developments in state-run immigration facilities.

Florida Senators Chevlin Jones and Carlos Guillermo Smith were joined by state representatives Anna Escamani, Angie Nixon, and Michelle Rayner during this visit.

Just days earlier, President Donald Trump had visited the same site along with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem. Following this, Democrats claimed that illegal immigrants were transferred to the new detention centers during the night. They expressed concerns about conditions at the site, noting that rain had fallen shortly after the facilities opened. This, they argued, raised issues regarding safety and emergency preparedness in what they describe as an unstable environment.

The lawmakers emphasized their right to inspect taxpayer-funded facilities, asserting that the project is fully managed by the state of Florida and not a federal initiative. They criticized the facility as an inhumane detention center, alleging it is part of a larger scheme to benefit certain political donors under the guise of border enforcement.

Spanning 30 square miles, the facility is designed to house 5,000 detainees and is claimed to be monitored by natural wildlife such as crocodiles and pythons. Lawmakers have characterized it as a poorly conceived and cruel camp.

Democrats further commented on the situation, calling it a “political theater” that puts real human lives at stake. They expressed the need for immediate oversight, citing extreme weather events, structural issues, and reported human rights violations. They implored that focus should be redirected to pressing issues faced by Floridians, like the housing and insurance crises, rather than creating additional confusion.

The recent developments follow an incident where Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested at an ICE detention center, an event that had drawn attention to the facility. Environmental groups have since filed a federal lawsuit, asking for a halt to construction to evaluate potential ecological impacts. Deputy Chief Tricia McLaughlin of the Department of Homeland Security referred to the lawsuit as “lazy,” a claim made against activists in Florida.

The DHS has not immediately offered any commentary regarding these recent statements or developments.
