Trump Hints at Major Announcement About Improving DC

Trump’s Announcement on D.C. Security Plans

President Donald Trump has hinted at a significant announcement regarding efforts to enhance security in Washington, D.C., in light of recent shootings in the city.

On Monday night, Eric Tarpinian Yachim, an intern working for Republican Representative Ron Estes, was shot and killed, as confirmed by his council office. Trump discussed plans to “clean up” D.C. while speaking with Daily Caller White House correspondent Reagan Reays, addressing concerns about Congressional control in the city amidst the ongoing violence.

Previously, in May, two staff members from the Israeli embassy were also shot near the capital’s Jewish Museum, just weeks before the Yachim shooting. The Department of Homeland Security, led by Christa Noem, has acknowledged the identities of the embassy staff and indicated that investigations by D.C. police are underway. Ongoing efforts are in place to gather more details.

At present, the elected mayor and thirteen city council members govern Washington, D.C. This structure was established under the District of Columbia Home Rule Act of 1973, which allows residents to elect their local government. Despite this, councils retain significant power over local laws and financial decisions.

The recent shooting has echoed longstanding worries about rising crime rates in Washington, D.C. Data from the Heritage Foundation’s D.C. Judgment Committee reveals that between 2018 and 2022, fewer than 2% of individuals apprehended for illegal firearm possession faced prison time. In 2024 alone, nearly 2,900 guns were recovered by police in the district, according to the Metropolitan Police.
