Federal Judge Orders Charge in Minnesota Shooting Case
A federal judge in Minnesota has mandated that Vance Luther Boerter remain in custody as he awaits trial for a series of shootings involving a former state legislator and her husband, as well as a state senator and his wife. The incidents occurred on June 14th.
Boerter, 57, hailing from Green Isle, Minnesota, stated that “Minnesotans want to know what’s going on,” while expressing his eagerness to uncover the truth surrounding the events of that day.
Judge Micco found sufficient cause to hold Boerter for trial, noting that bail is not applicable in federal court. A separate state court had set his bail at $5 million for the charges related to murder and attempted murder.
Defense attorney Joe Thompson indicated that Boerter would face trial for these charges by July 15th. Additional criminal charges are possible, depending on findings from a recent investigation in federal court.
Boerter’s alleged actions include the shooting of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, at their home in Champlin, Minnesota, shortly after 2 AM on June 14th. Boerter reportedly approached the couple while disguised as a police officer, misleading them until it was too late. An FBI affidavit detailed that Senator Hoffman sustained multiple gunshot wounds but survived and is recovering after emergency surgery.
Moreover, Boerter attempted to execute further violence against other state legislators. He first visited the home of State Senator Christine Burner but found it empty. Then, when trying to reach State Senator Ann Rest, he fled after a police officer discovered his vehicle parked nearby.
His final attempt at violence took place at the home of House Speaker Melissa Hortman. After triggering emergency lights, he faced off with Brooklyn Park police officers outside her house. Boerter reportedly opened fire on the officers, who returned fire, with one officer involved, Zachary Baumtrog, being placed on administrative leave as per protocol following officer-involved shootings.
Upon forcing his way into the Hortman residence, Boerter is accused of shooting Speaker Hortman, her husband Mark, and their golden retriever, Gilbert. He evaded capture for a time before being apprehended in a nearby field on June 15th.
After the recent hearing, Thompson addressed reporters, stating that the investigation is ongoing to clarify the incident and whether anyone else may have been involved.
During a court appearance dressed in yellow prison garb, Boerter voiced various complaints about his conditions at the Sherburn County Jail, such as wanting his cell lights to be turned off at night.
Thompson noted that Boerter’s complaints were met with strong responses from the Sherburne County Sheriff, who reminded everyone that Boerter is not in a hotel, but rather in prison.
