Trump Welcomes Released Hostage at the White House
On Thursday, President Trump hosted Edan Alexander, the last American released from Hamas custody, at the White House.
Alexander, 21, was freed in May shortly before Trump’s trip to the Middle East, which was seen as a sign of “good intentions.” Trump mentioned that discussions for a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel are expected to occur soon, possibly next week.
According to reports from May, Alexander, originally from Tenafly, New Jersey, had emigrated to Israel. He volunteered for the Israeli Defense Forces and was part of the Elite Golani Brigade. He was captured by Hamas during a terrorist incident on October 7, 2023.
After nearly 600 days in captivity, Alexander was handed to the Red Cross, which struggled to access him during his time held by Hamas. He was set to be returned to Israeli forces in Gaza before going home.
Upon his release, Alexander spoke to the president. During their meeting, he mentioned that his captors treated him better after Trump won the election in November.
Meanwhile, several American citizens remain in Hamas custody. Proposals suggest that up to eight living hostages and approximately 18 deceased individuals could be returned to Israel next week under the terms of a potential agreement. Additionally, two more living hostages might be released by the end of a proposed 60-day ceasefire. Ultimately, ten more living hostages and 12 bodies are still reported to be with Hamas, with hopes of a comprehensive release following a final ceasefire agreement.
