Defense attorney Mark Geragos commends jury's verdict in Diddy case

Diddy Acquitted of Assault and Sex Trafficking Charges

Shawn “Diddy” Combs was found not guilty on Wednesday of assault and sex trafficking after a federal trial that lasted two months.

With a strong defense team, the rapper was facing serious consequences, potentially life in prison for three counts against him. However, the most severe charges couldn’t hold up during deliberations. The judge did convict him on lesser charges that related to prostitution.

Mark Jelagos, a notable criminal defense attorney and associate of Diddy, expressed confidence in the outcome, stating he believed the decision was the right one.

The jury had communicated to Judge Arun Subramanian that they were unable to unanimously agree on the main charges, indicating the complexities of their opinions. There were several notes exchanged during deliberations, and the judge encouraged ongoing discussions until they reached a final decision.

Initially, there was some confusion about the ruling, which left Jelagos feeling somewhat anxious. He recounted his thoughts upon learning that the jury didn’t find him guilty of conspiracy and sex trafficking, which he found surprising.

After deliberating for about two hours the following morning, the jury affirmed that Diddy was not guilty of any conspiracy or sex trafficking offenses.

The judge jokingly remarked on Diddy’s relief at avoiding a return to MDC Brooklyn. Once the verdict was announced, Diddy kneeled, took a moment, then stood and applauded, prompting cheers from the gallery.

A hearing next week will set a date for sentencing, where Diddy’s term could range significantly. The prosecution is pushing for a lengthy sentence of 51 to 63 months, while the defense is advocating for a much lighter 21 to 27 months. The defense attorney felt those figures were a bit excessive.

“Honestly, I don’t think this case warrants those kinds of numbers. Even if he receives a sentence, he may qualify for federal programs that have emerged under this administration,” Jelagos mentioned.

There’s still uncertainty about the sentencing timeline and the actual length of time Diddy might serve, considering his recent acquittal.

The trial’s opening brought out accusations, with Tenny, part of Diddy’s defense team, asking the jury to look beyond the aggressive framing of their case. They focused on the nuances of personal relationships rather than the charges of violence and criminal activity.

The case has revealed layers of emotion, such as jealousy and infidelity, intertwined with Diddy’s more complex nature. It’s clear—though not entirely straightforward—that the effort from his defense team was pivotal in shaping the outcomes of this trial.
