Carville: Passing the GOP megabill will be viewed as a 'mass extinction event'

In a recent discussion, veteran Democratic strategist James Kerrville expressed his thoughts on the Republican tax and spending bill that President Trump is set to sign on Friday, describing it as a potential “mass extinction event.” He anticipates that Democrats could secure over 40 House seats come mid-2026.

“The unified Democratic Party voted against this bill,” he noted, emphasizing that the opposition crossed ideological and ethnic lines. “We can leverage this singular issue all the way through 2026. Paul has a point,” he added, perhaps hinting at foresight among his party.

Kerrville also mentioned current sentiments in New Jersey, referencing a state where Democrats managed to win only a couple of seats in 2021. He suggested that political analysts will view this situation in retrospect as a significant moment in political history.

The House GOP passed Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” on Thursday, sending it to the president for his signature. This legislation, which passed by a vote of 218-214, encompasses key spending priorities and proposes cuts to Medicaid and tax reductions instituted in 2017.

On Thursday, only two House Republicans, Thomas Massey of Kentucky and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, opposed the bill, while all Democrats voted against it.

At a rally in Des Moines, Iowa, Trump criticized Democrats for their lack of support for the substantial package, claiming Republicans might reap political benefits in the upcoming midterms. “Everything we did with tax cuts was something they didn’t back—yet they’ve rebuilt the military. I think they plan to use that in future campaigns,” Trump remarked.

“However, they refused to vote because they dislike me. And frankly, I can’t stand them either. I believe they harbor disdain for our country,” he asserted.

“As for the upcoming elections, where people will vote on this, I swear to you, it feels like they’re already 26 points underwater,” Kerrville stated on Thursday, adding that the Democratic Party has yet to kick off an educational initiative regarding the bill.
