Democratic Reactions to Trump’s New Legislation
Democrats are voicing their frustration after the recent passage of President Donald Trump’s so-called “big, beautiful bill.”
Critics within the Democratic Party have focused on cuts to Medicaid, asserting that the new stipulations were designed to, in their words, “eliminate the waste, fraud, and abuse of government programs,” while also claiming to protect those who depend on these services the most.
Following the bill’s approval on Thursday, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) remarked, “This is one of the saddest days in modern American history,” during a conversation with a reporter.
“People get hungry. People get sick—on a scale unlike anything we’ve seen before—all to fund tax breaks for billionaires and major corporations that don’t really need it,” she stated.
“I think I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s astounding,” Ocasio-Cortez added.
She also raised alarms about the significant funding increase for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which will receive about $74 billion following the new legislation.
“I don’t think anyone is ready for what happened with ICE,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote. “This isn’t just a budget increase; it’s substantial. It surpasses the budgets of the FBI, U.S. Prison Bureau, DEA, and others combined. It makes what’s happening look trivial in comparison.”
“People will die. Lives will be lost. All this to feed a corrupt government. It’s alarming to see the differences firsthand; there are simply no safety nets anymore. It’s a disaster.”
In contrast, President Trump celebrated the bill’s passage in Iowa on Thursday, kicking off the countdown to the 250th anniversary of the U.S. on July 4, 2026.
“One big, beautiful bill brings the most powerful borders, the strongest economy, and the mightiest military on the planet, ensuring that the United States stands tall anywhere on this beautiful globe,” he boasted before an enthusiastic crowd.
“Since I took office, America has been on a winning streak like never before,” Trump continued. “We’ve made Trump’s tax cuts permanent, eliminated taxes on tips and overtime, and removed taxes on Social Security.”
Besides the tax benefits, the bill aims to secure borders, invest in modernizing air traffic control, increase child tax credits, and provide financial relief to seniors.
