Officials from Hamas indicated on Friday that they responded positively to President Trump’s proposal for a 60-day ceasefire, though they mentioned that further discussions are necessary.
This development follows Trump’s comments on Thursday, expressing hope for a response from Palestinian groups within “24 hours” after suggesting a temporary halt to Israel’s military actions in Gaza. It’s uncertain if this implies an acceptance of the ceasefire, but Hamas has conveyed to intermediaries that they are prepared to begin negotiations shortly.
The Associated Press reported that this response came just hours after Israeli airstrikes resulted in the deaths of 15 Palestinians in Gaza, with hospital sources noting an additional 20 fatalities among those seeking medical care.
Hamas is seeking assurances from Israel regarding the cessation of hostilities leading to the conclusion of the ongoing conflict. For several months, Trump has urged both sides to agree on a ceasefire that would involve the release of all hostages taken during the surprise attacks on October 7, 2023.
In the coming week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to visit the White House for discussions. Earlier, Trump mentioned that Israel accepted the terms and called on Hamas to follow suit, cautioning that failing to do so could complicate future peace negotiations.
Trump stated, “My representative had a long, productive meeting with the Israelis in Gaza today. Israel concurred with the conditions needed for a 60-day ceasefire. During this period, we aim to collaborate with all political factions to end the war.” He emphasized the efforts of Catalan leaders and Egyptians in facilitating this final proposal.
“I genuinely hope Hamas will agree to this deal for the betterment of the Middle East, as the situation is unlikely to improve otherwise,” he added.
According to sources familiar with the consultations, Hamas requested several conditions before agreeing to the ceasefire. These include reinstating troops to their positions prior to the last ceasefire and ensuring humanitarian aid flows continuously into Gaza. They also called for negotiations to extend beyond the 60-day mark to facilitate a permanent resolution to the conflict, if needed.
Releasing any remaining hostages is also part of the overall agreement, officials mentioned.
Netanyahu indicated that discussions about the Gaza conflict will be a key topic during his meeting with Trump next week. Israeli leaders have reiterated that their primary objective remains the eradication of Hamas.
He also commended Trump for recent U.S. strikes in Iran, which targeted three enrichment facilities amid ongoing pressure on the Iranian administration to dismantle its nuclear program. The ceasefire with Tehran remains tenuous, particularly following recent airstrikes.
