NATO Secretary General Praises Trump’s Commitment to Defense Spending
NATO Secretary General Mark Latte recently acknowledged President Trump’s dedication to the military alliance during an interview. He noted that Trump’s influence has motivated member countries, spanning 32 nations, to allocate a more significant portion of their gross domestic product toward defense.
In this conversation, which was highlighted by The New York Times, Latte expressed confidence in Trump’s understanding of the importance of collaboration to ensure both U.S. security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Latte, who made headlines for his colorful commentary regarding Trump’s language about Iran, asserted that Trump’s leadership contributed significantly to a commitment for nations to reach 5% of their GDP spendings by 2035.
“I think it’s important to give credit where it’s due,” Latte stated. “President Trump deserves recognition for encouraging these commitments. Without him, we probably wouldn’t have achieved such agreements, especially not the 2% target this year and aiming for 5% in the future.”
Trump has been vocal about the need for NATO allies to increase their military expenditures and equitably distribute the responsibilities of collective defense. He argues that some European nations haven’t met their fair share of spending.
While many member states have pledged to boost their defense budgets, several have yet to reach the 2% benchmark established in 2014.
In June, the President shared a private message from Latte that included congratulations on approving a U.S. military strike against key Iranian nuclear facilities. Latte remarked that Trump’s decision enhances safety for all nations involved.
The former Dutch Prime Minister emphasized that Trump was stepping into a significant achievement in The Hague. “This was challenging, but we secured agreements for 5% across the board,” he noted.
When questioned about Trump’s release of the message prior to the upcoming NATO summit, Latte responded in an interview with Lulu Garcia Navarro, “One important aspect is that he handled the situation in Iran effectively. As I stated in that text, we are heading towards another major accomplishment. This NATO summit is focused on reinforcing commitments to 5% defense spending, which is truly transformative.”
