LA Mayor Bass takes action in lawsuit challenging 'unconstitutional' immigration raids

LA Mayor Joins Class Action Lawsuit Against Federal Actions

On Tuesday, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced her participation in a class action lawsuit aimed at challenging what she describes as the “unconstitutional, reckless” actions of the current administration in the region.

Bass expressed concern that the Trump administration is using cities as a “test case” to push their political agenda while disregarding constitutional rights. She stated, “Los Angeles, alongside counties, cities, and organizations, is taking the administration to court to prevent any violations of the U.S. Constitution and federal law.” She emphasized that this move is about demonstrating American values and unity within the city.

Interestingly, Bass has faced criticism for her efforts to block an ICE operation in a local park that had seen some criminal activity. City attorney Heidi Feldstein Soto shared that the lawsuit aims to deliver a clear message to the Trump administration, indicating that Los Angeles will not accept federal actions as “standard operating procedure.”

She noted, “The concentration of armed immigration agents, many without identification, creates fear and confusion in our communities. Today’s motion to intervene shows that we won’t allow these actions to become the norm.”

A coalition, including immigration advocacy groups and the ACLU of California, initiated the original lawsuit that accuses the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of conducting illegal immigration operations targeting immigrants, particularly those of color. The coalition seeks an immediate halt to what they describe as unconstitutional raids across the Los Angeles area.

The nonprofit organization claims that ICE’s actions have resulted in inhumane detention conditions and a lack of basic necessities for those detained. In response, DHS has denied the allegations, calling the claims of racial profiling “disgusting and decisively false.”

The lawsuit demands better treatment for detainees, particularly concerning overcrowded and poorly maintained facilities, which are described as “dungeon-like.” This announcement coincided with a recent report of militarized vehicles and federal agents seen marching through MacArthur Park, where local children were present for summer camp.

According to a release from Bass’s office, the intent behind the federal actions appears to be “to instill fear throughout Los Angeles.” She affirmed that she and other officials would not tolerate this behavior and would utilize all available resources to address what she called a “reckless assault” on the community.
