Diogo Jota of Liverpool reportedly was driving too fast before fatal accident in Spain, police inquiry shows

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother were involved in a fatal car accident last week. Authorities reported on Tuesday that Jota was exceeding speed limits while driving a Lamborghini, which is believed to have had a tire blowout, leading to the vehicle veering off the road.

The ongoing investigation hints that Jota was behind the wheel, though police have not definitively confirmed whether he or Andre Silva was driving at the time of the crash.

The tragedy unfolded near Zamora in northwestern Spain, resulting in both Jota and Silva losing their lives, a shocking event for the football community.

At just 28 years old, Jota was a promising talent, while Silva was only 25. Their funeral was attended by Liverpool players as well as members of the Portuguese national team this past Saturday.

Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, carried a floral arrangement crafted in the shape of Jota’s No. 20 jersey, while teammate Andrew Robertson made a similar tribute for Silva’s No. 30. Notable figures from football, including Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes and Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias, also paid their respects over the weekend.

“These are really tough days,” commented Portuguese national coach Roberto Martinez at the funeral. “But we’ve demonstrated that we are a close-knit family. Their spirit will remain with us always.”

Reports indicate that the brothers were on their way to take a ferry from northern Spain to England when the accident occurred.

In a statement released Thursday, Liverpool FC expressed their sorrow over Jota’s tragic loss and requested privacy for the families, friends, teammates, and staff affected.

Just days prior to the accident, Jota had married his long-time partner, Root Kaldoso.

Cristiano Ronaldo, a legend of the Portuguese team, also shared his grief online, saying, “It makes no sense. We were just together on the national team. You were just married. My heartfelt condolences go out to your family, including your wife and children.”

Jota had an impressive record, netting 47 goals in 123 matches for Liverpool.
