Three sources close to the matter have indicated that OpenAI is set to launch an AI-driven web browser aimed at challenging Google Chrome’s dominance in the market. The release is anticipated in the next few weeks and seeks to transform the browsing experience for users by harnessing artificial intelligence. Unlike Google, OpenAI’s approach may allow for more direct access to user data, a critical factor in Google’s success.

If OpenAI’s browser attracts even a fraction of ChatGPT’s 400 million active users, it could significantly impact Google’s advertising revenue. Chrome, as a core component of Alphabet’s advertising strategy, is believed to generate approximately 75% of the company’s revenue by leveraging user data for more effective advertising and directing search traffic to Google’s engine.

Instead of navigating websites in the traditional sense, OpenAI’s browser will likely encourage interactions through a chat interface, reminiscent of ChatGPT. This fits into a broader strategy by OpenAI to integrate itself into users’ personal and professional lives, according to one of the sources.

OpenAI has not publicly commented on this development, and the sources opted to remain unnamed as they were not authorized to disclose this information.

Driving this initiative is entrepreneur Sam Altman, whose company made waves in late 2022 with the launch of ChatGPT. Despite its initial momentum, OpenAI is navigating fierce competition from tech giants like Google and emerging startups like Anthropic, all vying for space in the fast-evolving AI landscape.

In a move to expand its influence further, OpenAI has declared intentions to enter hardware markets by acquiring the AI device startup IO for $6.5 billion, which was founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive.

This browser is intended to seamlessly integrate AI capabilities, enabling features that can execute tasks on behalf of users, like making reservations or filling out forms directly on websites.

According to StatCounter, OpenAI’s influence has spread in the browser market, achieving over two-thirds global market share, while Google Chrome still reigns with over 3 billion users. Apple’s Safari, trailing with a 16% market share, is in a distant second place. Recently, OpenAI noted that ChatGPT has gained 3 million paid business users.

This year has seen other AI startups, such as the Browser Company and Brave, introduce their own AI-powered browsers capable of acting on user requests. Additionally, Perplexity unveiled its AI browser, Comet, just last week.

Chrome’s integral role in Alphabet’s advertising strategy has raised questions of monopoly, prompting a Justice Department investigation. OpenAI’s browser is reportedly built on Chromium, Google’s open-source code, which also serves as the foundation for competing browsers like Microsoft Edge and Opera.

Notably, OpenAI brought on two former Google vice presidents who were part of the original Chrome development team, further solidifying its intentions in this space. There have been discussions about the possibility of acquiring Chrome if legal conditions permit.

For its part, Google intends to appeal a ruling related to its perceived monopoly and maintains that it has no intention of selling Chrome.
