Community Comes Together in Kerr County, Texas, After Devastating Floods
In the wake of the tragic floods last weekend, numerous volunteers have rallied in Kerr County, Texas. While many are extending their hands for search and cleanup operations, others are focusing on supporting the emotional and spiritual needs of the community.
Faith-based organizations are stepping in to offer solace to survivors and the families affected by the disasters, guiding them as they navigate their recovery journey. Josh Holland, the international director of the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team, shared insights on how essential it is to meet the emotional and mental needs of people grappling with recent tragedies. He emphasized that the team’s approach aligns perfectly with the collective effort to assist Kerrville residents during this challenging period.
Holland stated, “Our trained pastors know there’s no magical phrase to ease the pain. Sometimes, as Christians, the best thing we can offer is just to listen, to be there, to share in those moments of grief.” He further remarked that the atmosphere in Kerrville carries a palpable sense of heaviness, particularly in tightly-knit communities where everyone is connected to those suffering.
Artist Max Greiner Jr., known for designing the King’s Sculpture Prayer Garden, expressed that the place has become a beacon of peace amid the turmoil. He noted the significance of faith in helping residents cope, suggesting that without it, the path ahead would be much more difficult for them.
The garden features a towering cross, which Greiner mentioned is situated at the midpoint between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. “It’s a place for families to find solace when times are tough,” he explained. “While there’s sorrow in the river, there’s hope in the mountains.”
Marcus Brow, national director for Christ’s Soldiers, urged people to remember that even small contributions matter. He reassured the community, saying, “There’s always something you can do, whether it’s contributing donations or supplies. Every bit counts.” He believes that encouraging involvement, no matter how small, is crucial during these difficult times.
Additionally, leaders from various religious organizations emphasize the importance of reminding affected individuals that they are not alone. The community’s response—to share prayers and support for those mourning losses or facing challenges—reflects a deep commitment to uplifting one another in the aftermath of devastation.
