Rep. Jasmine Crockett Expresses Emotional Response to Senator Padilla’s Removal
In a recent podcast discussion, Rep. Jasmine Crockett from Texas shared her deep emotional reaction to the forced removal of California Senator Alex Padilla during a June press conference held by the Department of Homeland Security. She described feeling “broken in tears” as she watched the incident unfold on television.
Invited by comedian Hasan Minhaj as a guest on his podcast, Crockett addressed the situation, which had left a significant impact on her. “I had no warnings—they just played a loop of what happened to Senator Padilla, and I literally started crying,” she recalled. It was hard for her, she said, especially knowing that Padilla is the first Latino senator California has ever had. “He’s a state senator… and yet, there’s no respect whatsoever for him or his humanity,” she added.
During the press conference on June 12, Padilla entered just as Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem was getting ready. Video footage from the event showed that he was quickly confronted by Secret Service and FBI agents who escalated the situation. “I’m Senator Alex Padilla,” he announced during the commotion, trying to assert himself amidst the chaos.
Padilla’s removal sparked a media frenzy, especially after it was reported that he was temporarily handcuffed as the press conference continued. Republicans accused him of staging a scene, while over 200 Democrats from both chambers condemned the incident as unprecedented.
The situation coincided with rising tensions in Los Angeles due to protests related to immigration policies. The events sparked more significant anxiety among citizens, prompting the mobilization of the National Guard to restore order and implement a curfew.
