Ukrainian Ambassador to the U.S. Departing Amid Changing Diplomatic Landscape

The Ukrainian ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, is set to leave her position as Ukraine seeks to strengthen its relations with Washington amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiha announced her departure, noting, “She’s very effective and charismatic, but every diplomat has a rotation cycle,” during a recent radio broadcast in Ukraine.

Markarova’s exit comes just before an important meeting in Rome, where international leaders will discuss support for Ukraine’s recovery following the war. Participants will include Ukrainian special envoy Keith Kellogg and German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz, among others.

This change follows a recent conversation between President Zelensky and President Trump, during which Markarova’s future was also a topic of discussion.

Sibiha emphasized that President Zelensky’s intent is to rotate ambassadors across all G7 and G20 nations, focusing particularly on enhancing ties with the U.S.

While praising Markarova’s contributions, Sibiha acknowledged the tensions she faced with some Republican lawmakers. House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized her for not including Republicans in an event at a factory in Pennsylvania last September involving Zelensky and former Vice President Kamala Harris, suggesting it raised questions about her ability to represent Ukraine fairly in Washington.

There was also a notable incident in February when Markarova was seen with her hand on her face during a tense moment in a meeting between Trump and Zelensky, highlighting the seriousness of their discussions regarding military funding for Ukraine.

Markarova’s term, which began in 2021, is ending not due to expulsion but rather as part of the typical four-year diplomatic rotation. Potential successors include Andry Yamak, head of the Ukrainian president’s office, along with Finance Minister Sergie Marchenko and Orha Stefanishna, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration.
