Mamdani Gains Key Support in NYC Mayoral Race
Democrat socialist Zohran Mamdani is emerging as a leading candidate in the mayoral race for New York City, recently securing the backing of influential politician Adriano Espaillat.
Espaillat, widely recognized as one of the most powerful Latino figures in the city, has thrown his support behind Mamdani. If elected in November, Mamdani would become the first Muslim mayor of New York City. In a social media post, he expressed gratitude to Espaillat for joining the campaign, emphasizing their shared commitment to affordable living and standing against authoritarianism.
Mamdani and Espaillat plan to participate in a campaign event Thursday afternoon, where they’ll formally announce the endorsement from Espaillat, a five-term state legislator originally from Uganda.
The backing from Espaillat is seen as a significant boost for Mamdani, particularly after he recently outmaneuvered more established candidates, including former Governor Andrew Cuomo, to secure the Democratic nomination. Cuomo, who has faced many scandals and resigned during his third term, had previously collaborated with Espaillat during the Democratic primary campaigning.
While Mamdani celebrates this endorsement, Cuomo’s challenges in the race present a setback for him. Interestingly, Cuomo, sidelined previously, is still vying for political relevance as he runs in the upcoming elections.
Current mayor Eric Adams dropped his own re-election push earlier this year amidst controversies but is now seeking reelection as an independent.
In the general election, Mamdani will also face independent candidate Jim Walden and Curtis Sliwa, co-founder of the Guardian Angels. Espaillat, the chair of the Hispanic Caucus in Congress, has voiced strong opposition to former President Trump’s immigration policies.
Adams, who had supported Espaillat in previous elections, has recently faced scrutiny for his administration’s approach to immigration enforcement. His approval ratings have plummeted, particularly after serious allegations of corruption surfaced against him.
Following Espaillat’s endorsement of Mamdani, news outlets, including The New York Times, began to highlight Mamdani’s growing popularity, thanks in part to his focus on tackling high living costs and affordable housing. He has successfully leveraged social media to disseminate his platform, which includes proposals like free public transportation and childcare and making education more affordable.
Despite these developments, Mamdani faces fierce criticism from Republicans who aim to label him as an extremist. Recently, former President Trump went so far as to call Mamdani a “100% communist madman,” indicating the intensity of the political landscape leading up to the upcoming midterm elections.
