Manhunt for Father Accused of Killing Daughters Hits a Snag

Authorities are still on the hunt for Travis Decker, a 33-year-old father accused of murdering his three young daughters—9-year-old Evelyn, 8-year-old Olivia, and a 5-year-old. His disappearance into the vast wilderness of Washington has been complicated by a reported sighting in Idaho’s Saucetooth National Forest over the July 4 weekend.

This sighting had raised hopes of a breakthrough in the investigation, which had been ongoing for about a month. However, after interviewing a man thought to be Decker, officials confirmed he was not the suspect they were looking for.

“Hikers fitting the general description of Decker—same height, dark features, and tattoos—have also been spotted,” noted Michael Lee, former superintendent of the area’s search operations.

Authorities called off the search in the Idaho Forest after speaking with this individual, who was confirmed to have been in the Bear Creek area over the holiday weekend. Decker is wanted in connection to the tragic disappearance of his daughters, who were reported missing by their mother on May 30 after a scheduled court visit. At that time, Decker was reportedly homeless, moving between a motel and various campsites.

The heartbreaking circumstances surrounding the case include the discovery of a body with evidence suggesting foul play at a campsite, along with Decker’s abandoned truck nearby. The investigation has involved multiple agencies, employing both land and aerial searches. Recently, canine units that specialize in locating human remains were deployed, but there is currently no concrete evidence that Decker is alive or still in the area.

Despite the exhaustive search efforts, including DNA evidence linking Decker to the crime scene, the authorities continue to emphasize that he is considered armed and dangerous—but they do not view him as an immediate threat to the public. He faces three counts of aggravated first-degree murder.

The U.S. Marshals Service has stated that a reward of $20,000 is available for information leading to Decker’s capture.
