ICE agents confront protesters outside San Francisco Immigration Court

A confrontation erupted outside the immigration court in San Francisco this week, stemming from a video released by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) that captured a volatile clash between agents and demonstrators.

This incident, which occurred on Tuesday, adds to a pattern of confrontations involving federal immigration officials. ICE has reported a staggering increase of nearly 700% in attacks against immigration agents compared to the previous year.

ICE addresses concerns regarding the viral video.

The footage shared by the agency on X depicts masked protesters clashing with ICE agents armed with batons. In the video, agents can be heard urging the protesters to “go back, come back,” while the crowd responds with chants of “shame.” At one point, protesters seemed to attempt access to a black ICE SUV parked by the courthouse, fiercely pushing against agents and some even climbing onto the vehicle’s hood.

ICE stated on Thursday, “We are not protesting this action. We’re being attacked while doing our job. They’re obstructing federal officers. This behavior is illegal and dangerous. We will not halt our enforcement of immigration laws.”

Many protesters were noted to be wearing Kefir scarves, commonly linked to Palestinian activism. Reports suggest that the group attempted to shield the identity and legal status of those taken into custody from ICE.

Legislators in blue states discuss restrictions on mask-wearing by federal agents as ICE operations rise.

Local outlet Mission Local reported that the protests were a response to the detention of certain migrants, though specific details about the incidents remain unverified. An ICE representative described the rioters as obstructing and attacking federal law enforcement agents fulfilling their duties. They emphasized, “These violent acts are a violation of law, reflecting a growing trend of aggression against ICE personnel, with recent incidents leading to shootings and fatalities at ICE locations.” The spokesperson insisted that under Chief Noem’s leadership, the Department of Homeland Security would not tolerate such violence and that those responsible would be held accountable.

As the Trump administration continues to bolster immigration enforcement, those opposed to these actions are becoming increasingly vocal, particularly about the detention practices occurring in immigration courts.

Protesters are calling for an end to ICE agents using unmarked vehicles and disguises. A legislative proposal put forward by California Democrat Alex Padilla and New Jersey Senator Cory Booker seeks to enforce visible identification standards for immigration enforcement officers, aiming to prevent agents from hiding their identities during operations.

Booker commented on the bill, stating, “For weeks, Americans have been witnessing unmarked federal agents detaining individuals from the streets, creating fear within communities nationwide. The absence of visible identification has contributed to confusion and fear, undermining public trust in law enforcement.”
