Immigration Policy Thoughts from John Kelly
Former Democratic presidential candidate John Kelly made remarks to the BBC about immigration policy, stating, “Trump was right. The problem is us [Democrats]. It should have been handled correctly.” This comment indicates a noticeable shift among some Democratic leaders, who seem to be grappling with the implications of increased immigration.
Kelly’s insights come during a time when Trump is under renewed pressure from business groups advocating for more economic immigration. He mentioned that Democrats need to address issues that matter to Americans. In his interview, he expressed concern that the party has overlooked immigration for too long, essentially allowing issues at the border to worsen.
He stated directly, “If your borders are not protected, you don’t have a country.” It’s a straightforward thought, but one that packs a punch. He believes that the very essence of a nation relies on having meaningful borders, and he hopes President Biden adopts a firmer stance on enforcing immigration laws.
A BBC reporter noted that Kelly’s comments could be seen as giving Trump a political boost regarding his border policy stance for the upcoming 2024 election. Kelly responded firmly, asserting that “he was right” and suggested everyone could benefit from moving in the same direction on this issue.
However, Kelly also echoed a Democratic narrative, pointing the finger at Trump for the current problems. He claimed that Republicans were willing to collaborate on legislative solutions, yet Trump discouraged them by warning that such actions would benefit Democrats.
Interestingly, the Democrats’ proposed immigration bill appears crafted to facilitate the influx of lower-wage immigrants, a point that has drawn considerable criticism from GOP lawmakers. The conversation quickly shifted from current immigration challenges to discussing Biden’s future, leaving some questions about wage impacts and the influx of immigrants unaddressed.
In the aftermath of potential challenges in 2024, Democrats seem hesitant to tackle issues related to wages and housing inflation. Lobbyists are actively pushing for policies that would increase immigration, aiming to further integrate immigrant communities into American jobs and politics.
For example, on July 6, two Indian Democrats introduced a proposal welcoming millions of migrant workers from India. This initiative, backed by influential figures in the Democratic Party, aims to balance labor needs and immigration by creating various pathways for legal entry.
Their plan includes broadening immigration opportunities for skilled individuals and easing processes to retain foreign university graduates in STEM, thus enhancing America’s global competitiveness. While they claim to address border security, the effort leans heavily toward facilitating migration that could impact wages and job opportunities for American workers.
In contrast, some Republican leaders are advocating for approaches that prioritize expanding opportunities for American workers in a competitive wage economy. Yet, Trump seems to be under pressure from business interests to allow an increase in low-wage workers, further complicating the immigration narrative.
