Wil Clark criticizes announcer for causing Rafael Devers issue

Will Clark, a Giants legend, is quite upset—not with Raphael Devers, but with a colleague from the Red Sox, Dave Fleming.

During a recent episode of the Eric Burns and Deuces Wild podcast, Clark expressed his frustrations regarding Fleming, who had mentioned that Devers declined an offer to collaborate with him.

“I was there,” Clark recounted, “and [Giants announcer] Dave Fleming introduced Devers to his brother, Will Fleming. I believe he’s part of the Red Sox radio and TV team. Later, he goes on a podcast…and just dismisses the whole thing.”

Clark talked to Fleming when the Red Sox visited San Francisco from June 20 to June 22.

“Honestly, this is ridiculous,” Clark continued. “It’s the first and the second. Laffy and I are good. I work with him every time I’m on base or whatever.”

On Boston’s WEEI radio, Fleming stated that Clark “totally gets” why Devers would be reluctant to work with him at first base for the Red Sox.

Devers, who was traded to the Giants in mid-June, declined a base role in Boston in favor of players like Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison, Jose Bello, and outfielder James Tibbs III.

As for Devers, the 28-year-old is currently batting .225 with two home runs and nine RBIs through his first 80 at-bats with San Francisco.

So far, he hasn’t taken on any other positions aside from first base and designated hitter.
