Call for Bipartisan Investigation into Threats at Trump Rally
On Thursday, Harris Faulkner, a host on Fox News, voiced her concerns on Fox Business’ “Kudlow,” urging a bipartisan effort to uncover details regarding an alarming incident at President Donald Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The rally, which took place on July 13, 2024, saw a 20-year-old named Thomas Matthew Crooks attempt to assassinate Trump while addressing supporters. Faulkner questioned host Larry Kudlow about the lack of ongoing coverage of this incident, particularly given the scant information available about the assailant and his motives.
Faulkner recalled former U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle and mentioned incidents involving Senator Marsha Blackburn, expressing confusion over Cheatle’s appearance at the rally amidst security failures. She emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting that not only was the president in danger, but others were also harmed, including the tragic death of a former fire chief.
“I really don’t know what she was thinking,” Faulkner remarked about Cheatle. She noted that Senator Blackburn and others had tried to confront Cheatle for answers, suggesting a similar approach should be taken with members of Biden’s team, but in a constructive manner. “Why isn’t this a broader public discussion? This really should be bipartisan,” she asserted.
Reports from Wednesday indicate that six U.S. Secret Service agents have been suspended following their failure to ensure security during the Butler rally. This suspension reportedly happened over the last few months, and agents are entitled to contest penalties ranging from 10 to 42 days.
During the rally, Crooks managed to fire several shots into a crowd, narrowly missing Trump and injuring bystanders, ultimately resulting in the death of Corey Comperatore, a former volunteer fire chief. The Wall Street Journal reported that Crooks had priorly flown a drone over the rally site, capturing hours of setup footage.
In the wake of the attack, lawmakers criticized Cheatle’s leadership and the apparent breakdown in Secret Service protections. Cheatle was called to a Congressional hearing where she faced bipartisan critique for the significant security lapse. Just days later, on July 23, 2024, Cheatle announced her resignation, taking full responsibility for the failure.
As a troubling follow-up, about nine weeks after the Butler incident, authorities arrested 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Rouse, suspecting him of planning another assassination attempt against Trump at the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida.
