Jasmine Crockett, a member of the Texas Progressive Caucus, unexpectedly joined a closure committee discussion this week with a former aide from the Biden administration, Ashley Williams. Her arrival, which came about 15 minutes after the start of the meeting, caught reporters off guard.
Later than expected, Crockett had little to share about the proceedings but did express that she wasn’t particularly “absolutely” concerned about President Biden’s mental fitness at this point. She emphasized the need for support for Biden’s allies who were interviewed, indicating that the atmosphere created by the Trump administration has made things challenging for Congress and its critics.
As things heat up with the ongoing investigation, she mentioned, “I never worried” about Biden’s mental state before. “It’s crucial to be present for these witnesses; we’re aware of the potential threats they might face,” she added, reflecting on the daunting nature of the current political climate.
Crockett was notably the only lawmaker who attended the interview with Williams, which was primarily staff-led, making attendance optional for lawmakers. “Right now, Republicans act like this is a top priority, yet they haven’t shown up,” she remarked, underscoring her commitment to the process.
She noted how essential it was for her to be present, particularly if there are complaints filed about a former official, as she wants to ensure everything is accurately recorded. “I just don’t want things to be misinterpreted,” she said.
When asked if the meeting was still ongoing when she left, Crockett mentioned she had to leave early for another engagement. A source familiar with the situation disclosed that Crockett entered during the questioning by Republican investigators but didn’t have a chance to ask questions herself.
Williams, who served under Biden, did not address reporters on her way to the interview, and Crockett seemed taken aback by the situation involving Dr. Kevin O’Connor, Biden’s former doctor, who was also being deposed.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer explained that Williams was not compelled to appear before them, unlike O’Connor. During a recent hearing, O’Connor had addressed questions related to Biden’s health concerns.
Crockett has previously stated she doesn’t share worries about Biden’s mental capacity but has made similar critiques regarding former President Trump. Meanwhile, Comer’s investigation focuses on whether Biden’s past aide concealed signs of his mental and physical decline, an allegation that Biden’s supporters have refuted.
