Mark Vientos steps up to ignite Mets' comeback victory against Royals

Kansas City, Mo. — Mark Vientos Makes Impact in Mets’ Comeback Win

Mark Vientos had quite the night at the plate, bouncing back from a frustrating start with a pivotal three-run double that helped propel the Mets to an 8-3 victory over the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. The win allowed New York to snap a two-game losing streak, despite only getting two hits in the eighth inning, a moment that seemed to wake them from a sluggish performance.

It was, perhaps, a much-needed boost for Vientos, who had been struggling with a 13-game RBI drought. The atmosphere shifted dramatically as Pete Alonso, visibly upset after breaking his bat in frustration earlier, watched Vientos come through in a big way. Vientos raised his hands in celebration after his crucial hit.

The Mets managed to make noise in the ninth inning as well, thanks to a three-run homer from Francis Colindor, who hit his 22nd of the season shortly after Juan Soto added another blast. This marked the sixth time this season New York has hit back-to-back homers.

With Starling Marte and Jesse Winker both sidelined due to injuries, Vientos anticipates getting more at-bats as the designated hitter. Going into the game, he had a .617 OPS, which didn’t quite reflect the expectations the Mets had after his strong performance last season.

Earlier in the game, after hitting three pitches and leaving the bases loaded, Vientos’ frustration boiled over as he snapped his bat during an earlier at-bat. Meanwhile, the Royals had their moments too; Bobby Whit Jr. hit a two-run homer, giving Kansas City a temporary 3-1 lead in the seventh inning with a well-placed 97-mile fastball into left-center.

Kodai Senga made his return from the injured list, pitching four shutout innings, though he allowed two walks and four hits. He was pulled after 67 pitches, which raised some eyebrows given he’d been shaky in earlier outings.

In a back-and-forth game, Alonso battled through eight pitches to earn a walk that gave the Mets an initial lead of 1-0. Vientos, however, had a challenging plate appearance, striking out after a three-pitch sequence that seemed to frustrate him even more.

The Royals started strong too, as Whit’s double almost brought in runs, only for Senga to retire the next three batters. Senga seemed to have a slip-up when he attempted to throw to third but hit Jonathan India instead, keeping the game unpredictable.

India’s run was held up when he appeared to be injured after a throw clipped his hand. Nevertheless, Nick Loftin managed to tie the game in the sixth with a bloop double, leading to a tense showdown between the teams as they navigated this tightly contested battle.
