A wish for favorable press images made President Trump a more vulnerable target for assassination in 2024, report indicates.

Concerns Over Rally Security Strategy

Concerns from campaign staff regarding the visuals for a key photo of Donald J. Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, led to the US Secret Service opting against using large agricultural equipment. This choice ultimately impacted the safety measures that could have prevented the gunman, Thomas Matthew Crook, from targeting Trump and the attendees.

A report released by the Government Accountability Office and highlighted by US Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) indicated that due to these concerns, the Secret Service altered its security plans. Instead of using agricultural equipment to obstruct sightlines from a nearby building, they depended on a large video screen and an enormous American flag to block Crook’s view from 130 yards away.

The report noted, “The lack of agricultural equipment probably created opportunities for gunmen.” As the Secret Service worked on security for the Butler Farm Show event, campaign staff expressed that the large machinery would interfere with press photos taken during the rally.

Interestingly, the Secret Service Advance team adjusted their plans without consulting senior officials, leaving top brass unaware of these changes. Crook, positioned on the roof of the American Glass Research International Complex, fired shots during the rally on July 13, 2024.

Initially, the Secret Service’s plan included using agricultural machinery to mitigate sight vulnerabilities. However, campaign staff believed this would disrupt press coverage.

The report further stated, “It’s unclear whether the agricultural equipment originally intended to address sight vulnerabilities could have effectively blocked or deterred gunmen.”

Incidentally, an eyewitness account from the rally revealed that Trump rallied the crowd by shouting, “Fight, fight, fight!”

Without the agricultural machinery, the gunman exploited the elevated rooftop for a clear shot at Trump, posing a severe risk to him and others at the event. Crook had been flagged as suspicious by local law enforcement nearly an hour before the incident but managed to evade capture, scale the roof, and shoot, narrowly missing Trump and injuring others.

FBI Involvement and Security Oversight

As the one-year mark of this assassination attempt approached, Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Investigations, issued a subpoena to the FBI for information regarding Crook and the rally security measures.

Johnson expressed frustration about the continued lack of transparency about security at the Butler Rally and the details surrounding the assassination attempt. “Americans deserve more answers regarding the failures that led to this security breakdown,” he commented.

The subpoena was partly prompted by public dissatisfaction over the FBI’s handling of investigations, especially after they were criticized for the lack of transparency in the Jeffrey Epstein case.

The Senate demanded that the FBI provide security footage that might reveal the gunman’s actions leading up to the shooting. The FBI has until August 1 to comply and is also expected to send representatives to a legislative hearing about the incident.

Johnson has repeatedly criticized government agencies, including the Secret Service and FBI, for their failure to cooperate in the investigation.

Additionally, the recent GAO report highlighted the Secret Service’s ongoing failures, which contributed to the near-assassination of Trump. While the agency stated they are in the process of reforming their policies to prevent future incidents, real change is still in progress.

Grassley remarked, “The events of July 13 were a culmination of years of poor management practices.” He added that the Biden administration’s refusal to increase security measures ahead of the rally also played a role in the failures experienced that day. “It’s remarkable that President Trump survived the attempt on his life,” he concluded.

The report underscored that the Secret Service did not adequately communicate threat assessments before the rally, which significantly hindered the ability of local law enforcement to adapt their security measures effectively.

As the investigation continues, many believe that better communication and resource allocation could have altered the course of these events. Local law enforcement stated they would have taken different precautions had they been made aware of the threats faced by Trump.

In summary, the advance team seemed unaware of the resources they could have utilized for enhanced security. Some believed requests for added resources would be declined based on past experiences, leading to a sense of complacency.

The Secret Service has confirmed there will be updates in their protocols to address the inefficiencies highlighted in this serious security breach.
