Bill Gates Makes Major Donations
Bill Gates is rapidly giving away his wealth, with recent estimates indicating his fortune has plummeted to around $51 billion. This figure marks a significant drop from $175 billion on July 3, taking him down to the 12th position in the Bloomberg Billionaire Index.
Steve Ballmer, his former associate at Microsoft and current owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, is now ahead of him in the rankings.
Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla, remains at the top of the list with an impressive net worth of $360 billion.
A significant factor in Gates’ diminishing fortune is his commitment to philanthropy. In May, he announced plans to donate 99% of his wealth within the next 20 years, alongside plans to dissolve the Gates Foundation by the end of 2045, which he established with his ex-wife, Melinda.
Gates expressed a poignant sentiment: “When I die, people will say a lot about me, but I’m determined that ‘He died rich’ isn’t one of them.” He emphasized the pressing global issues he feels he must address using his resources.
His decision to give came after witnessing the impact of his foundation’s work on treatable diseases that disproportionately affect people in developing countries, like diarrhea and pneumonia.
Despite his efforts, Gates has pointed out the challenges he faces, particularly as funding for humanitarian initiatives shrinks amid conflicts in Ukraine and Israel, which he believes is stalling progress.
Bloomberg adjusted its estimates related to Gates’ wealth and charitable contributions to reflect these changes more accurately.
Even as of Saturday, Gates’ net worth had dipped to approximately $123 billion, according to Bloomberg.
The foundation, which Gates co-founded in 2000, aims to continue its charitable focus for many years after their passing, having reportedly disbursed over $100 billion since its inception.
