Controversial National Anthem Performance at Orioles Game
The Baltimore Orioles’ take on the “Star Spangled Banner” during a recent home game has sparked debate, with many considering it one of the most contentious performances of the anthem ever.
This performance happened before the Orioles played against the New York Mets at Camden Yard on Thursday. It featured local electronic musician Dan Deacon, who has gained quite a following, with over 160,000 monthly listeners on a popular streaming platform. His work even appeared in films such as “Venom.”
However, reactions to his rendition were mixed. Some viewers questioned whether it was a groundbreaking take on art or simply a jarring noise. One fan even remarked, “I think the Orioles officially hit rock bottom.”
Video footage of Deacon’s performance circulated on social media, showing him wearing oversized glasses and a Hawaiian shirt over an Orioles T-shirt as he gestured dramatically while singing. The crowd’s response was varied, with the team mascot appearing cautiously in the background. Some attendees, both adults and children, chuckled at the performance, while others sang along, seemingly unsure of how to react.
Back at the game, Orioles’ interim third base coach was seen looking puzzled during the performance, as if trying to grasp what was unfolding. This public spectacle divided the internet; some criticized it as a digital disaster while others praised its distinctiveness. One sports commentator quipped, “WTF is this?” while dubbing Deacon’s performance a “stigma on America.”
On the contrary, some online users admitted they wanted to dislike it but ultimately found it appealing. One of Deacon’s supporters noted, “You don’t have to be Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey every night,” emphasizing the importance of individuality in such performances.
Amid this mixed reception, reminiscent of a previous MLB event where another singer faced backlash for an anthem performance, the Orioles did manage to win both games against the Mets that day, further adding a layer of irony to the situation.
Fans hoping for a similar experience might recall an equally unconventional rendition performed by the bassist of a well-known band at a Lakers game in 2016, highlighting how unpredictability can sometimes produce memorable moments in sports.
