Ndamukong Suh Retires from the NFL After 13 Seasons

Ndamukong Suh has announced his retirement from the NFL at the age of 38. He shared the news on Saturday through a heartfelt message on social media, reflecting on a year that included the loss of his father.

The post opened with a poignant statement: “July 12, 2024 was the most difficult day of my life.” Suh expressed how the day marked the farewell to someone who not only raised him but also inspired and believed in him unconditionally. “He was more than just a father; he was my idol, my coach, and my anchor,” he wrote.

He went on to share that every moment spent on the field felt intertwined with his father’s influence. “Every snap I took had his fingerprints on it,” he said, noting how he always felt he was playing for more than just himself. Suh felt a deep sense of representation—for his family, his legacy, and, of course, for his father.

Interestingly, despite not being active in the NFL since 2022, he hadn’t formally announced his retirement until now. Suh shared that it was his father who ultimately urged him to transition away from football. “Before he passed, he shared some final advice with me. That conversation has stayed with me,” he stated. “Today, exactly a year later, I’m honoring that wish. I officially retire from the NFL.”

Suh reflected on the many memories made over his 13 seasons, mentioning accolades like five All-Pro selections and a Super Bowl ring. “I’ve given my all on the field,” he concluded. “There are countless battles to reminisce about.”

Drafted by the Detroit Lions as the second overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Suh made an impact quickly, being named the Defensive Rookie of the Year. He had a standout career, which included being named to the All-Pro team multiple times during his first five years.

As a Nebraska alumnus, he also won a Super Bowl in 2020 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Throughout his 13-year career, Suh accumulated impressive stats, totaling 600 tackles, 130 tackles for loss, and 71.5 sacks.
