Trial starts for Colorado dentist accused of murdering his wife with cyanide.

Murder Trial of Colorado Dentist Begins

The highly publicized murder trial in Colorado is set to commence on Monday. Prosecutors allege that James Toliver Craig, a local dentist, poisoned his wife, Angela Craig, using cyanide mixed in a protein shake.

James, aged 47, faces charges of first-degree murder following Angela’s death in March 2023. The couple had six children together. The trial is anticipated to last around three weeks.

The Allegations Against James Craig

According to court documents, Angela, the mother of six, started showing concerning symptoms in March 2023. These included dizziness, vomiting, and severe headaches. Her health deteriorated rapidly between March 6 and March 16, with reports of blurred vision and seizures. Tragically, she was later declared brain dead on August 18, 2023, with the cause of death listed as acute cyanide poisoning.

Suspicion surrounding the cause of her sudden decline began on August 15 when Angela was hospitalized. James’s dental colleague, Ryan Redfern, alerted the hospital staff about possible poisonings, stating he suspected that James was poisoning his wife.

The Investigation Unfolds

Redfern claimed that James had ordered potassium cyanide. Hospital staff acted as mandated reporters and informed the police. Investigators later discovered that James had left a digital trace by searching for untraceable poisons using a secret email account.

In further development, authorities found that James had exchanged emails with Karin Kane, a Texas orthodontist, detailing personal plans that raised more questions about his motives. This secret communication was reportedly conducted through an email address not linked to any personal devices but accessed via the clinic’s computer.

The emails hinted at a closer relationship and spoke of wanting to be there for one another, even as Angela lay in the hospital.

Background Context and Possible Motives

Prosecutors theorize that James may have been aiming to free himself from his troubled marriage to start anew with Karin. Angela’s sister revealed that Angela had expressed plans to leave James for years but felt constantly persuaded to stay. The couple was facing financial troubles at the time of her death.

Angela’s sister claimed that James had ongoing issues with other women and had previously attempted to harm himself.

The Arrest and Charges

James was arrested and charged with first-degree murder among other offenses in mid-March 2023. The serious nature of the charges has attracted immense attention.

A Plot Against Investigation

Interestingly, while awaiting trial, James allegedly solicited a fellow inmate to kill Detective Bobby Olson, the lead investigator on his case. This revelation came from recorded conversations in prison and adds yet another layer of intrigue to the already complex case.

Prosecutors also allege that James had attempted to stage a false suicide narrative for Angela, potentially involving planted evidence.

Trial Developments

The trial faced delays in November 2024 when James’s attorney withdrew from the case, stating that James wanted to pursue questionable legal strategies. This unexpected move meant a postponement to allow James time to secure a new defense team.

With the situation still evolving, the trial is tentatively scheduled to begin on July 14th.
