Texas Flood: Focus on Heroism Amidst Tragedy
Representative Chip Roy of Texas expressed on Sunday that the primary narrative surrounding the devastating floods shouldn’t center on assigning blame, but rather on the acts of heroism displayed by those who stepped in to help.
“The real story isn’t about the finger-pointing that the media emphasizes. It’s about the heroism of individuals who showed up, like Ian, alongside the Coast Guard. I was standing with them when I met the president,” Roy mentioned during an interview with Shannon Bream on “Fox News Sunday.”
He recalled a specific moment involving a Coast Guard member who, despite the chaos, was seen giving a Jolly Rancher to a little girl being airlifted by helicopter. “It’s the heroism of all the first responders from Kerrville,” he stated.
While talking about the flood’s aftermath, Roy noted a significant cross on a hill he passes while driving to Carville, Texas. “When I reflect on the tragedy as a whole, it’s all about that cross and its power,” he commented.
The floods, which began on July 4, have resulted in at least 129 fatalities, with around 170 individuals still unaccounted for as search efforts continue into the second week.
Officials at various levels are grappling with concerns over the absence of early warning systems in identified flood zones and the allowance of summer camps to operate within hazardous flood-prone areas.
Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem has refuted claims of delays regarding federal assistance for Texas, attributing them to new regulations for FEMA grants exceeding $100,000.
Governor Greg Abbott offered a football metaphor to counter those blaming specific parties for the disaster, taking aim at Democratic critics. “Every team has its mistakes. The losing side seeks to assign blame. The championship side focuses on recovery and ensuring a victory,” he said.
Earlier this week, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump visited the Texas Hill Country. Trump remarked, “I’ve encountered many hurricanes and tornadoes, but nothing has compared to this.” This comment followed a tour of the region alongside local, state, and federal representatives.
Trump commended Noem for the federal response to the flooding, even as changes have been made regarding the administration’s approach toward FEMA adjustments following the disaster.
Noem confirmed that her team was present in Texas shortly after the flooding started. “Within just an hour or two, we had resources from the Department of Homeland Security deployed to assist Texans,” she reported on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
“It was a devastating scene, and the efforts of the Coast Guard certainly highlighted that,” she added.
