Trump Reflects on Assassination Attempt One Year Later
On Sunday, President Donald Trump marked the anniversary of an assassination attempt against him, asserting that he believes he alone can “return our beloved republic to greatness and save our nation from those seeking its ruin.”
The incident occurred during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024, where Trump sustained a minor injury when a bullet grazed his ear. Tragically, one individual lost their life, while another was injured in the event.
Secret Service agents had to intervene, fatally shooting 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who had taken a position on a nearby building.
“A year ago today, at 6:11 PM—just eight minutes after I addressed thousands of Americans at that rally—the fire erupted, and the assassin’s bullets came perilously close to ending my life and silencing our movement to restore American greatness,” Trump recalled.
“But my life was saved by Providence and the grace of God,” he continued. “As we commemorate the anniversary of the tragic events of July 13, 2024, we reaffirm that the American spirit will always triumph over the forces of evil.”
In his remarks, Trump praised the first responders and audience members who rushed to help those injured during the chaos. “Those with scars from that night defended the republic during one of our darkest times,” he stated. “They faced danger to provide comfort and lifesaving care.” He emphasized that ordinary Americans transformed into heroes that day, showcasing the best of the country.
Trump also honored Corey Comperatore, a rally attendee who lost his life while trying to protect his family. “The world will never forget Corey’s heroic sacrifice to safeguard his wife and daughters,” he said. “His love, courage, and loyalty are eternally inspiring.”
The incident raised significant concerns regarding security protocols after questions emerged about how the shooter managed to access a strategic position near the rally site, leading to a resignation within the Secret Service. In subsequent months, further security breaches at Trump’s events prompted ongoing scrutiny of the agency’s practices.
Despite new leadership within the Secret Service under Trump’s watch, lingering questions about security gaps remain. The gunman’s motives are still unclear.
Reflecting on the broader implications, Trump declared, “I believe it was divine intervention that saved me, and I’m committed to restoring our nation from those who wish to see it fall.” He implied that the legacy of July 13, 2024, will always resonate deeply within the fabric of the country.
Lastly, when approached by reporters, Trump expressed a desire to not dwell on those dark moments, stating, “I have work to do, so I don’t want to think too much about that. It’s risky to be in my position, but I prefer to focus on the future.”
