Wegmans Embraces AI Shopping Carts

Wegmans is stepping into the future of grocery shopping. The beloved chain has begun testing AI-driven smart shopping carts at four locations in upstate New York, aiming to offer a more intuitive shopping experience.

Earlier this month, Wegmans unveiled Instacart’s AI-powered Caper Carts at its Dewitt site in Syracuse, New York.

This initiative represents the first rollout of Caper Carts at Wegmans, according to a press announcement.

The smart cart technology, part of Instacart’s Connected Stores initiative, lets customers keep track of their expenditures while shopping. The carts automatically register items as they’re added, enabling shoppers to bag items concurrently.

Equipped with cameras, digital scales, and location sensors, these carts facilitate a quick checkout process by allowing payments directly through the cart, thereby sparing customers from waiting in line.

This tracking technology could benefit budget-conscious shoppers, as it helps them monitor their spending without the usual checkout stress.

For those looking to use these smart carts, Wegmans customers can sign in to their Shoppers Club accounts right from the cart’s screen.

David McIntosh, Chief Connected Store Officer at Instacart, stated that “Caper Cart transforms daily grocery shopping into a faster and more personalized experience.”

Currently, the Caper Cart is in the testing phase only at the Syracuse location. A Wegmans representative mentioned that the trial is confined to these four stores—two in Rochester (Penton and Pittsford) and one in Buffalo—along with the Dewitt location in Syracuse. They emphasized the importance of gathering customer feedback to refine the service.

The potential for a wider rollout at Wegmans will hinge on the outcomes of these tests. “Our aim is to see if smart cart technology aligns well with our diverse selection and meets customer needs,” a Wegmans representative shared.
