Minneapolis Mayoral Candidate Unveils Ambitious Plan

Omar Fateh, a Democrat running for mayor in Minneapolis, shared his vision on Sunday, proposing a freeze on rents, a swift increase in the minimum wage, and a refusal to work with federal immigration agencies.

Currently a Minnesota Senator, Fateh posted a video on his X account, expressing the need to shield Minneapolis from what he termed the “hostile White House.” He aims for the minimum wage to rise by $20 by 2028, while also calling for the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) to avoid any involvement with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE). His platform bears resemblance to fellow Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.

“Protecting our communities from Trump means the MPD shouldn’t interact with ICE, no matter the situation,” Fateh stated. “Our community deserves a mayor who will stand up and firmly say, ‘No, not here.'” His stance, however, draws some controversy, particularly regarding the extent to which mayoral influence should extend into federal matters.

In another campaign video, Fateh claimed that nearly half of the MPD’s calls could be redirected. “The officers are not social workers and often can’t respond appropriately,” he argued. He advocates for “rent stabilization” to combat what he describes as “price gouging,” along with a policy to prevent rental evictions.

Representing Minnesota’s 62nd Senate District, which includes parts of South Minneapolis, Fateh is the son of Somali immigrants and is noted as the first Muslim to serve in the state Senate.

“As someone who works full-time and as a part-time senator, I want to keep money in people’s pockets and support our local economy,” he noted, emphasizing his goal of implementing a $20 minimum wage and rent stabilization by the end of the decade.

Mamdani has gained attention for raising New York City’s minimum wage to $30, along with introducing government programs like free grocery stores and public transport. His recent successes raise questions about the potential for similar progressive shifts in Minneapolis as Fateh aims to challenge incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey.

Critics of Frey accuse him of aligning too closely with the police and large corporations, especially following the unrest after George Floyd’s death in 2020, which caused significant damage across the region. The aftermath of those events still influences local political dynamics today.
