Ex-AOC supporter recognizes the unrealistic nature of Mamdani's policies

Former supporter of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York representative, has expressed skepticism about Zohran Mamdani, a NYC mayoral candidate who identifies as a socialist. This supporter highlights what they see as a “fantasy” being marketed by Mamdani.

Mamdani, described as charismatic and tech-savvy, has attracted a significant following among young New Yorkers, reportedly gaining over 50,000 volunteers striving to amplify his candidacy. His promises, including a free bus system, free childcare, and taxing the wealthy, have drawn comparisons to Ocasio-Cortez, another young and appealing Democrat who made waves nearly a decade ago.

Biggers, who now works as a social media editor for the Free Press and considers herself an activist, recalls being mesmerized by Ocasio-Cortez during a limited-time interview that showcased her fervor and vision. She described how Ocasio-Cortez’s debut video deeply resonated with audiences, making her lively persona hard to ignore.

Though Biggers acknowledges Mamdani’s similar charm, she notes that her perspective has shifted since her experience with Ocasio-Cortez. As a 35-year-old mother and homeowner, she reflected on the changes in her outlook over the years.

While some, including Mamdani’s supporters, describe him as a strong advocate for progressive policies, Biggers argues that many critiques aimed at him, such as claims from opponents labeling him as “totally radical,” may be exaggerated. She, however, is cautious about government-run initiatives, suggesting that the quality of services may suffer—citing experiences at the DMV as a metaphor for potential inefficiencies in government-run grocery stores.

Biggers believes that although figures like Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez may have the right intentions, their ideas might not align with the solutions young people truly need. She points out a certain misunderstanding among proponents of these radical policies, suggesting that they mistakenly view capitalism as the root cause of various societal issues.

She concludes that promoting more government spending and intervention will likely contribute to higher taxes and greater living costs, leading to a more centralized authority that takes away individual liberties. At the moment, representatives from both Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani have not yet responded to inquiries for comment.
