The Unexpected Breakfast Champion of New York
Forget the usual breakfast staples. If you think bacon, eggs, or cheese rolls define the perfect morning sandwich in New York, you might want to reconsider.
A recent exploration by Chowhound delved into the best breakfast sandwiches across states, using Yelp reviews and online community feedback to uncover what locals truly cherish.
Despite the fame of classic New York bagels and the bodega bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches, there’s a surprising contender that has emerged as a favorite. The “green egg and ham” breakfast sandwich from Blancaccio, a food shop in Brooklyn’s Windsor Terrace, has been crowned the state’s top choice.
This sandwich is described as a delightful combination of pesto scrambled eggs, prosciutto cotto, and fontina cheese, all piled onto thick rolls. Sounds tempting, doesn’t it?
Customers online can’t seem to get enough of it. Many agree that the sandwich is “absolutely tasty,” “bonker good,” and even a “hangover helper.”
However, not everyone is sold on this title. There’s some playful banter among New Yorkers about what really constitutes the best breakfast sandwich. When a mayoral candidate fumbles their order, they might get a good-natured ribbing, reminiscent of Andrew Cuomo’s infamous “Bacon, Cheese, Egg Order.”
Brancaccio’s offerings have certainly won over locals, with former gubernatorial hopeful Cynthia Nixon among those who enjoy their classic bagels with a twist.
Joe Blancaccio, the Staten Island-native owner, launched his 600-square-foot shop in January 2010. It’s not far from where my grandparents used to live, so there’s a personal touch for me. Over the years, it has evolved into a beloved spot attracting food enthusiasts from all over.
The buzz surrounding Blancaccio’s is palpable. Anticipation builds as people search for something beyond the ordinary, and the Italian-style sandwiches loaded with gourmet ingredients deliver just that.
Part of the charm? The owner is often behind the counter, engaging with customers, all while 90s hip hop plays in the background. It really does feel like home. In fact, as one reviewer noted, “When you’re there for the first time, you’re regular. When you come back again, you’re basically family.”
Clearly, the green eggs and ham sandwich deserves its moment in the spotlight, even if it seems to challenge the deep-rooted preferences for bagels and BEC.
Try it, and who knows? You might just find your new favorite breakfast.
