Jasmine Crockett Criticizes Republicans Over Texas Flood Response
On Friday, Representative Jasmine Crockett from Texas slammed Republicans for their response to a devastating flood, suggesting they seem more interested in letting constituents “bury their members” than addressing climate change effectively.
She specifically called out Christa Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security during the Trump administration, accusing her of a slow reaction to the flash floods that wreaked havoc in central Texas over the Fourth of July weekend.
Crockett criticized those who had voted for what she described as a “big, ugly bill” aimed at combating climate change, arguing that it failed to properly address the underlying issues that contribute to such disasters. She expressed hope that recent actions would lead to an improvement in the environment, stating, “The reality is they’ve just finished the ugly bill and they don’t seem to believe in science.”
She added, somewhat resignedly, “What they ought to be doing is truly helping the people of America. Unfortunately, it feels like Republicans are choosing to bury their own constituents instead of encouraging a fulfilling life.”
The recent flooding has claimed the lives of over 120 individuals, with many others reported missing.
In the past week, several Democratic leaders have politicized the floods, citing climate change and criticisms aimed at the National Weather Service (NWS), where they argue that the Trump administration’s actions have intensified the situation.
A White House spokesperson, Abigail Jackson, described the politicization of the tragedy by Democrats as “shameful and nasty,” mentioning that the NWS had a staffing shortage that had been criticized by meteorologists and other experts.
Earlier, Crockett echoed sentiments from CNN analyst Michael Fanone, who suggested, rather bleakly, that Republicans may prefer a quick demise for low-income individuals. “I agree,” Crockett stated, adding, “It seems like it’s not a glitch but part of the overall design.”
