Zelenskyy appoints Svyrydenko to head Ukraine's government during the conflict with Russia

Ukrainian Government Restructuring Under Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is making significant changes to his government, displaying frustration as the war with Russia drags on for more than three years. The first deputy prime minister and current economy minister, Yuliia Svyrydenko, has been chosen to take the reins as the next prime minister. Meanwhile, the current Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal will transition to serve as the new defense minister.

Zelensky emphasized the need for a transformation in Ukraine’s administration to boost the country’s economic potential and support for its citizens. He laid out explicit measures intended to enhance domestic arms production and streamline government support programs. Svyrydenko expressed gratitude to Zelensky for her appointment, addressing “priority tasks” that include strengthening the economy and consolidating national resources to fortify Ukraine’s defense, especially as recovery efforts commence.

It’s notable that in Ukraine, the president has the prerogative to nominate the prime minister, though the appointment requires parliamentary approval from the Verkhovna Rada. On Tuesday, Zelensky held discussions with Svyrydenko and Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov regarding the incoming government’s critical priorities. These discussions highlighted the importance of fully equipping the army, particularly in expanding drone capabilities.

Shmyhal, who has been at the helm since 2020, is set to replace Rustem Umerov as defense minister. Zelensky acknowledged Shmyhal as the longest-serving prime minister since Ukraine’s independence in 1991, showcasing an appreciation for his tenure amid these turbulent times.
