Charlamagne Thinks Obama's Suggestion for Democrats to 'Toughen Up' Comes Too Late

Charlamagne Tha God on Barack Obama’s Comments about Democrats

Radio host Charlamagne Tha God shared his thoughts on Tuesday regarding former President Barack Obama’s recent comments, suggesting they could motivate Democrats to “strengthen.” In a fundraiser held last Friday, Obama remarked that Democrats should “just strengthen” instead of “gazing at their belly buttons” and “whimpering,” as reported by CNN.

Charlamagne expressed his views on “The Breakfast Club,” stating, “Democrats have been co-sick for many years.” He noted that this mentality explains why former President Joe Biden didn’t push harder for re-election. It’s interesting because, well, people have been saying this for a long time.

“Listening to people like President Obama echo what regular folks have been saying for years gives me a sense of warmth,” Charlamagne continued. “We’ve been vocal about Democrats being co-sick for a decade now. Their reluctance is part of why we find ourselves where we are.” He emphasized the need for Democrats to demonstrate strength, perhaps referencing how they should’ve told Biden he shouldn’t run again.

Biden notably didn’t withdraw from the presidential race until July 21, following a somewhat troubling debate against Donald Trump in June 2024. Charlamagne pointed out the recurring narrative among Democrats over the years, stating, “Google it. The language hasn’t changed for at least eight or nine years. Democrats lack backbone, and we’ve been saying this.”

Journalist Mougin Wood questioned Charlamagne about his strong opinions on the subject. Charlamagne replied, “It looks like this: ‘Hey Biden, you’ll be a one-term president.’ And regarding late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, she should have resigned because, well, age matters.” He feels this straightforwardness is necessary.

Co-host DJ Envy offered a different perspective, suggesting that being strong means staying true to your core values. He mentioned how Trump, regardless of opinions about him, acts in a way that resonates with his supporters.

Envy followed up with a rhetorical question: “If Donald Trump is the major threat as discussed, why aren’t we actively pursuing that?” Meanwhile, a recent Opinion survey indicated that many voters view Democrats as “liberal, weak, and corrupt,” with this perception of weakness being especially prominent among Democratic and leaning voters.

News Nation political contributor Chris Chiliza noted that these poll results pose a significant issue for Democrats. “You can’t present yourselves as weak,” he stated. “Trump, love him or hate him, is viewed as a fighter. Meanwhile, many believe Democrats see themselves as ineffective. That’s incredibly concerning for the party and suggests deeper problems.”
