Reflections on Gospel Music Legacy
Pioneers of gospel music, Seko and Bebe Winans, recently shared their thoughts on their legacy, faith, and the impact of their music. With a career stretching over 40 years, they have much to reflect on.
“You navigate the truth of the Bible by continuing to spend time with it. It’s contagious,” Cece Winans, 60, remarked, a notable artist with 17 Grammy Awards. “You never fully arrive. You just keep learning about Jesus. He’ll nourish you, shape you, and help us become more like Him.”
Cece continued, emphasizing the importance of a continuous relationship with Christ. “It keeps you focused and helps ensure that your life pleases Him, which, in turn, informs your music.”
The Winans brothers are set to host the 40th Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards on August 16th at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville. This event marks four decades celebrating the sound and influence of gospel music. Cece has also garnered eight award nominations, including Artist of the Year and Song of the Year.
“I’m humbled by the Stellar Awards. They gave us a chance,” Cece noted. “It’s truly an honor to receive recognition from our peers.”
Bebe reflected on the milestone of the awards, calling it a significant spiritual moment. “Over time, I believe I will come to appreciate this even more. It’s about maturing and understanding the importance of our work, recognizing that God has a plan for us.”
Cece added that the future of gospel music should remain connected to its spiritual origins. “Our vision—and I think I can speak for Bebe on this—is for gospel music to continue expanding. We want to reach people beyond the church, ultimately sharing Christ’s love and peace.”
In the context of church, Cece emphasized the need for worship to promote unity. “If we come together to praise God, the world will see Him through us. Even if someone isn’t a fan, they can still enjoy gospel music, and I hope to keep contributing to that.”
Bebe echoed her sentiment. “Our music serves as an invitation to the world and encouragement for believers to keep their faith alive. I’ll keep trusting and loving God, extending that love outward.”
This year’s Stellar Awards will also feature artists like Pastor Mike Jr., Jason Nelson, and Tamera Mann, who are all nominated for Artist of the Year, alongside others like Donnie McClurkin, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, and Tramaine Hawkins.
