Rev. John MacArthur Has Passed Away
Rev. John MacArthur has gone to be with the Lord.
This influential pastor and theologian shared the gospel with millions during his nearly 60 years at Grace Community Church in Southern California. He also founded “Grace to You,” a media ministry, as well as a seminary. His impact on American Christianity is significant, shaping countless pastors and generations of believers.
Perhaps what truly defines MacArthur’s legacy is his steadfastness. He consistently defended the truth found in the Bible and never backed down from that stance.
In a world often marked by confusion and compromise, MacArthur stood firm.
Not only did he shepherd his congregation effectively, but he also aided countless Christians in navigating an increasingly anti-Christian society. He didn’t shy away from confrontations, especially when it came to proclaiming God’s truth.
Recently, MacArthur’s health declined, leading to widespread concern. Old footage resurfaced of him addressing Gavin Newsom, which went viral. This clip, from a CNN interview in 2004, highlighted MacArthur’s unwavering commitment to faith and his role as a Christian witness.
During his tenure as mayor of San Francisco, Newsom initiated the issuance of marriage licenses for same-sex couples. He justified his actions on CNN, framing them as part of a “Catholic practice,” thus defending the LGBTQ agenda.
Yet, his rationale didn’t hold up against MacArthur’s pointed question.
“I just want to ask the mayor: Do you believe the Bible is God’s Word?” MacArthur confronted him.
Newsom, clearly displeased with the question, replied, “Pastor, I’m not going to engage in a theological debate with you.”
MacArthur insisted, “This isn’t a theological argument. It’s a straightforward question. Do you see the Bible as the authoritative Word of God?”
After Newsom acknowledged the Bible as such, MacArthur pointed out the contradiction between the LGBTQ agenda and the teachings of Christianity.
“The Bible states that when God created humanity, it was intended to be ‘one man, one woman, united for life’,” he explained. “All writers in the New Testament affirm this. Sure, the New Testament brings grace, but it doesn’t erase sin; forgiveness comes through Jesus.”
MacArthur wasn’t just concerned about presenting God’s truth in a world filled with lies; he genuinely cared for Newsom’s salvation.
In a letter penned in 2022, MacArthur urged Newsom to reconsider his stance, suggesting his policies reflected a distorted moral perspective. The real goal of the letter was a heartfelt plea to heed what God’s Word has to say.
He warned Newsom about the weight of his leadership responsibilities and the inevitable judgment that comes for everyone, urging him to repent and embrace the gospel.
“You will stand before God who created you, and He will ask how you managed His authority in your governance,” MacArthur cautioned. “Without seeking forgiveness through faith in Christ, you stand in danger.”
He reassured that salvation is offered to those who repent, turning away from evil and trusting in Christ as Lord and Savior.
“Many churches and Christians across the nation are praying for your true repentance,” he concluded, calling for Newsom to abandon a life led astray and to seek Christ’s forgiveness.
This is MacArthur’s legacy: boldness without compromise, unwavering truth, and a passionate faith. A faithful servant, he is now at home for eternity.
