Veteran Arrested After Texas Detention Center Attack
Federal authorities apprehended a military veteran on Tuesday in connection with a July 4th attack on an ICE detention facility in Texas. This arrest comes after nearly 11 days of searching for him.
The FBI’s Dallas Field Office reported that 32-year-old Benjamin Song was taken into custody in Dallas. He is believed to have joined a group of 10 to 12 individuals in a coordinated assault on officers at the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas.
Despite his arrest, it appears that at least 10 other attackers were not caught at the time of the incident. Joseph Rothrock, Special Agent in charge at the FBI Dallas Field Office, mentioned the relentless efforts from the FBI to round up everyone involved in the shooting and thanked those who assisted in locating Song.
“His arrest is a testament to our commitment to safeguarding not just our communities but also the law enforcement personnel who are often subjected to such attacks,” Rothrock stated. He emphasized that violence against law enforcement will not be tolerated, and the FBI will pursue all individuals responsible.
Prior to his arrest, the FBI had offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to Song’s capture and conviction.
Song, a former Marine Reserve, faces serious charges, including three counts of attempted murder of federal officers and additional charges related to using firearms to facilitate violent crime. Reports indicate he fired two AR-15-style rifles during the altercation, injuring an Alvarado police officer and firing numerous rounds at unarmed corrections officers outside the facility. The details have stirred significant concerns about safety and law enforcement protocols moving forward.
